The Model 1018 async short range modem is able
to pass two discrete sets of handshaking signals: DTR & DCD are used
to control the point-to-point session, while RTS & CTS are used for flow
con-trol. This capabilitycombined with the Model 1018s ability
to support RS-232 data rates up to 57.6 kbps over two twist-ed pairmakes
the Model 1018 perfect for inexpensive campus Internet links.
Just use a plug-in Model 1018 at each remote computer, a rack of Model 1018RC
cards at the central site, and connect them with 2-pair copper wire at up
to 2.4 miles (3.9km)! SLIP/PPP Internet Link
